Teen Early Release Day Event
Nov 1 @ 1:15 pm – 3:15 pm

Join us for a Zombie Apocalypse Survival Course! In this hands-on workshop you’ll acquire the skills you’ll need to survive! Learn first aid care, the basics of “Bug Out Bags,” knots and lashings, how to construct an emergency shelter anywhere, and there might even be a crossbow demonstration.


Early Release Day Events are for middle and high school aged teens only. Adults and younger children will be asked to wait outside of the Gordon Room until the program has concluded.

Gentle Flow Yoga & Reiki
Nov 1 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Develop balance, strength, flexibility and focus in this alignment based class.

Reiki is an energy healing practice done by placing the hands in a series of positions slightly above the body, engaging the parasympathetic nervous system and activating our innate healing abilities.The end result is an overall feeling of ease of mind, body, and emotional state.

MCBA Book Club (Call To Sign Up)

Join us for our first MCBA Book Club, featuring the 2018 booklist. We will be meeting once a month to discus one of the 25 books on the list. For our first meeting we will be discussing Fish In A Tree. Light refreshments will be served. A fun activity will follow the discussion.

What is the Massachusetts Children’s Book Award?

The MCBA (Massachusetts Children’s Book Award) list is for students in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades.
Students are given a master list of book titles. After reading five of the books, students may vote for their favorite The list is compiled from nominations of participating teachers, librarians, and interested publishers. A selection committee works with the nominations and chooses 25 titles to appear on the master list.
History Book Group

The History Book Group Meets the 3rd Wednesday every month (except July and August) to discuss a history book picked by the group. All are welcome.

Description

Gain an insider’s view of book publishing at this program with literary agent, Jan L. Kardys, and Chairman of Unicorn Writers’ Conference. Jan will share her 40 years of experience inside 10 major NYC book publishers on such topics as developing a concept, writing a manuscript, editing, finding a literary agent, negotiating a publishing agreement, the various departments within a publishing companies, self publishing vs. traditional book publishing, subsidiary rights, marketing, utilizing the most cutting-edge technologies and social media services to increase visibility to literary agents, publishers and readers alike.

Biography

Jan L. Kardys’ diverse book publishing career includes executive positions at ten of the major book publishers – Doubleday, St. Martin’s Press, Scholastic, Macmillan, Scribner’s, Little, Brown & Company, Warner Books, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Lippincott & Crowell, Publishers, Simon & Schuster/Prentice Hall and Condé Nast Publications. Her experience and know-how are in editorial, art/production, subsidiary rights, contracts, copyrights, permissions, book agenting, editing, writer’s conferences, publishing consulting, and freelance editing. Jan worked for Google for three years where she added Internet sales and marketing to her already extensive expertise.

Heritage Films: Local Folklore Tales

Nathalia Holt author visit

Boston author and microbiologist Nathalia Holt will speak on her 2016 New York Times best-selling book Rise of the Rocket Girls: The Women Who Propelled Us, from Missiles to the Moon to Mars; questions and a book signing will follow. Holt is also the author of Cured: How the Berlin Patients Defeated HIV and Forever Changed Medical Science (2014). Visit her online.

About the book: Rise of the Rocket Girls is the true story of a group of elite young women at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory who shared a love of math. Their work influenced military rocket design, brought us the first American satellite, shaped lunar missions, and ushered in a new era of space exploration that continues today, where some of the women still work as senior engineers directing our missions to Mars and Venus. Rise of the Rocket Girls is based on extensive research and interviews with the living members of JPL team and illuminates the role of women in science both where we’ve been and the far reaches of space to which we’re heading.
