Information Literacy - a set of learning skills, which help you cope with the large amounts of information from different formats (print, database, the Web, etc.); to find organize, evaluate and effectively use the information.

Interlibrary Loan
- a service that allows you to obtain materials from other libraries without having to travel to them. You can fill out a form in the library to request books and articles. Books can also be requested online using your PIN.

Internet
- the worldwide network of computers linking individuals, business,
organizations, schools, etc.

Journal - a scholarly publication containing information written by experts on current research in a given field.

Keyword Search - a computer keyword search of the library catalog looks for words, or a combination of words, from the author, title, contents, notes or subject fields in a record.

Logical operators - words such as AND, OR, NOT that can be combined with
keywords to find information in catalogs, databases and on the Internet

AND narrows a search.  Both search terms have to be found somewhere in the record.
OR broadens a search.  Only one of the search terms need to appear in the record, not both.
NOT narrows a search.  A record is retrieved only when the first term is present and the second term is not.

Magazine - a periodical published primarily for a general group of readers.  Examples of magazines include Time, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated and  Seventeen.  A magazine usually does not contain scholarly articles.

Microform - printed material that has been photographed and reduces to a film
format to help preserve the material and decrease the space needed for storage. 
Special equipment is needed to look at this film.  Typical formats include microfilm,
microfiche or ultrafiche.

NOBLE - the online public access catalog of the North of Boston Library Exchange which includes Danvers, Peabody, Salem and many other libraries.
The catalog can be searched by author, title, subject heading or keyword. 

Oversize - a book that is too large to be shelved with regular-sized book and are stored on shelves just for larger books.  Look for the word "ovsize" in the
Call # section of the catalog record.
