After loving Chadwick Boseman\u2019s portrayal of T-Challa in <a href=\"http:\/\/evergreen.noblenet.org\/eg\/opac\/record\/3783365\"><em>Captain America: Civil War<\/em><\/a> and Ta-Nehisi Coates\u2019s memoir <a href=\"http:\/\/evergreen.noblenet.org\/eg\/opac\/record\/3650622\"><em>Between the World and Me<\/em><\/a>, my senses prickled at the thought of two amazing things coming together. Except <a href=\"http:\/\/evergreen.noblenet.org\/eg\/opac\/record\/3792908\"><em>A Nation Under Our Feet, Book One<\/em><\/a> is better suited to readers who are <em>already<\/em> Black Panther fans instead of people like me who a) don\u2019t read comics and b) are big fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Coates includes <em>some<\/em> backstory, but <em>A Nation Under Our Feet<\/em> basically just drops you into a plot and characters that are both unfamiliar and overwhelming. In a movie, it\u2019s okay for a side character to be quickly introduced and then thrown into the main conflict with either little or no explanation. But in a comic where that character is now the main star, that sort of \u201croll with it\u201d mindset no longer works. I\u2019m sure that, with a little Wikipedia digging and notes, I would have made it through <em>A Nation Under Our Feet<\/em> just fine \u2013 but Coates should have done that work for me.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So\u2026 I really wanted to like this.
