March Anne Tanner lives in Jubilee, GA with her brother, father and grandmother. At the change of each season, March Anne and her friends meet at a tulip poplar tree and change there names. Their secret names that is. But, the secret names are the least of the mysteries in March Anne’s life. The more her grandmother tells her same stories over and over the less March Anne seems to know – whether it’s her family history or how to make watermelon pickles. As her grandmother’s health begins to fade, March Anne needs to delve deep into the stories and confront her past in a way she never has before. This is a charming story for teens who like realistic fiction. Greene Angle takes some of the usual young adult themes and weaves them into a wholesome and original story.

Take a secret society, a hawk-tracking boy, a hummingbird in winter and plunk them down in a watermelon patch and you have the makings of a wonderful coming of age story.
