O Jerusalem ~ Laurie R. King

jerusalemInkonvellum got me hooked on the Mary Russell series. If you aren’t familiar with these and you are a fan of historical mysteries, you are in for a real treat. This series follows the exploits of Mary Russell a young ex-patriot living on the Sussex Downs with her aunt. Russell literally stumbles on a semi-retired Sherlock Holmes and becomes his apprentice. O Jerusalem is the fifth book in the series. King goes back in time to elaborate on the adventure that Russell and Holmes  undertook when they fled London in The Beekeeper’s Apprentice. Mycroft sends the pair to Jerusalem to aid the Hazr brothers – Mahmoud and Ali. Though the brothers are reluctant to have the help, Russell and Holmes soon disguise themselves as bedouins and travel the far reaches of British Occupied Palestine with their new companions. From mountaintop monasteries to underground aquaducts they piece together their mission one impossible task after another. Full of adventure and intrigue, O Jerusalem is a fascinating read.

  1. I think I would. Start with Beekeeper’s Apprentice. Then you have all the background. I suppose you could read them out of order after that, but I don’t think it would be as much fun. Maybe inkonvellum has a different take, but I’m pretty sure she suggested reading them in order.

  2. I’m with ta – reading them in order is best. It’s easy to get hooked on this series, that’s for sure.

  3. This series sounds good to me, too. I really like historical fiction, especially mysteries, but there are a lot of not-so-great ones out there. I’m glad to have a recommendation of a good book, and a good series — even better. And since I found the Lady Julia series (by your recommendation) to be wonderful, I have high hopes for this one, too!
