Patron Review: While Beauty Slept – Elizabeth Blackwell by Kim

From the first line of Chapter One, “I am not the sort of person about whom stories are told,” this book absolutely captivated me. It is told in the first person from the perspective of Elise Dalriss, a peasant girl who after losing almost her entire family to the plague sets out for the royal castle where her mother once worked to try to better her circumstances. From there you eventually meet almost all the characters from the original story. Here though is where the author not only subtly makes changes to the plot but also to the main characters, yet somehow still retains semblances of the original fairytale. I don’t cry often at the end of a book, but I freely admit this one left me a bit misty eyed. If you love fairytales with a twist I urge you to try this.
