Ari Reviews: Come See the Fair – Gavriel Savit

If you enjoy stories involving magic, spooky tales, seances, adventure, etc. you need to check this book out!  This was a great middle school children’s book that had all of the above mentioned with so many twists and turns that I could not put this book down and had to finish it in one sitting! The story takes place in the late 19th century during the famous Chicago’s World’s Fair.  Eva Root the main character in the book who is twelve years old is an orphan trying to survive in the world and works as a medium where she pretends to contact spirits of loved ones from the other side in her travels to her audiences who come to her traveling shows. Eva does not believe in bringing those back from the dead or it is possible to make contact with them. However, her doubts will change when one day she hears a peculiar voice chanting to “Come See the Fair!” Eva finds this very interesting and wonders why this voice within her is communicating with her and wants to seek out the answer as to why she needs to visit the fair. When Eva leaves behind her mediumship act and hops on a train to Chicago to attend the famous Chicago’s World’s Fair to solve the mysterious chant in her head for her to attend the fair. Eva meets a mysterious magician at the fairgrounds who needs her assistance to help him bring the world of magic alive. Eva at first, feels this magician is doing a great thing and discovers a whole new world beyond which will take her to worlds she has never imagined before. However, as she gets deeper into working with the magician along with the help of her friend whom she befriends on the train. When tragedy strikes at the fairgrounds and Eva loses the only friend she has ever had, Eva discovers a mysterious note and drawings left behind by her friend which will lead her to seek out many questions and answers.  Eva will discover as she investigates her friend’s cryptic messages and clues, there is something off and peculiar about the magician’s plan in bringing magic alive. Eva will have to navigate the spirit world that she once doubted that world cannot be reached with the living and will discover she possesses a gift she never knew she had within her to solve the mysteries behind the voice and the magician’s plan to solve the unknowns and questions she has from her friend’s death to the voice within her. Will Eva find what she is seeking in the book? You will need to read more to find out!  This was such a wonderful middle grade children’s book.  The author did a great job with the plot and storyline.  It was a quick read and the book had a lot of twists and turns along with magic, spookiness, adventure, etc.! I would recommend this to tweens and older who love books involving magical worlds, magic, ghosts, and quick reads.  It was one of my favorite children’s books I have read this year so far and I encourage you to read it!
