Here at Read This! we follow several book blogs. At any given time, the readers behind these blogs are involved in reading challenges, each with a given set of guidelines and timelines. We found one just recently that we thought we’d adapt for our patrons. It’s called the Genre Challenge.
| Guidelines:
Chose one of the following pursuits: 1. Read one book from each of the twelve genres listed below. 2. Select six genres and read one book from each. 3. Submit reviews of the books you read. You can do so either by picking up a paper form at the library, available on the Read This! display in the lobby, or online (click here for form.) 4. Only patrons of the Peabody Institute Library in Danvers are eligible to win the prize. 5. The Challenge runs November 2008 through May 2009 The Genres:

All participants who complete either pursuit will be entered into a raffle to win a Borders Gift Certificate or a copy of Deanna Raybourn’s Silent in the Grave.

Great contest! It will help me to get out of my Mystery Only books box.
I am having trouble deciding what constitutes Realistic Fiction. I understand the definition, but most books that i can find are children’s or YA. Any suggestions for adult R/F. I have read novels that might or might not qualify so I need some guidelines on this.
Would you be able to offer a list of suggestions for many if not most of the categories?

Thanks for your comment Laura! I hope you join the challenge. I hope you join the challenge. We do have some books in our display in the lobby representing the different genres. There’s a lot of cross-over with the genres so don’t worry if your not sure if something fits into a particular genre.
I tried to think of some realistic fiction that might appeal to you as a mystery reader though I’m not sure what appeals to you about mysteries so I might be missing the mark. I’ll try to post more when I think of them.

I’m surprised there are no non-fiction genres included. I recommend that for a future challenge.
