Rachel Reviews: The Other Black Girl – Zakiya Dalila Harris

Compared to both The Stepford Wives and Get Out, Harris’s debut is a tense psychological thriller that had me compelled from the start. Set over a few months, The Other Black Girl follows editorial assistant Nella after she’s introduced to her new cubicle neighbor Hazel, the eponymous Other Black Girl; receives threatening notes; and uncovers the real reason why she’s never been promoted at the white-majority publishing house at which she works. Though I was a bit underwhelmed by the narrative twist, The Other Black Girl’s intersectional take on race, class, and gender kept me engaged and reaching for it over TV or TikTok. Recommended for readers who love when the plot’s driving force is revealed—and then the action keeps going.
