Ari Reviews: Anatomy: A Love Story – Dana Schwartz

I have been wanting to read Anatomy: A Love Story for a while on my To-Read List and finally have gotten the chance to check this one out and this was a wonderful Young Adult Historical Fiction book I have read in quite some time! The story is set in early 19th century Edinburgh, Scotland where the book focuses on two main characters; Hazel Sinnet who has a passion in learning about human anatomy and to become a doctor someday rather than attend the social season in London attending balls, the theater, etc. with her family and her mother’s wish for her to marry their wealthy cousin. The other main character we meet in the book is Jack Currer who is trying to survive each day and is a resurrection man who digs up bodies for doctors and others which is a risky business in the city along with competition with other resurrection men who want to make profit as well for survival. Hazel and Jack will cross paths one day when Hazel tries to sneak into the lectures of Dr. Beechman at the Edinburgh Anatomist’s Society and their meeting will change both their lives forever. Hazel tries to disguise herself as a man enrolled in Dr. Beechman’s course lectures to prepare for the physician examination so she can start pursuing her dream to become a doctor, however when she is caught by a colleague of Dr. Beechman, she is discouraged to stop attending the lectures. However, Dr. Beechman offers Hazel a deal if she studies hard enough and passes the exam she can become a doctor and work alongside him and if she does not succeed the exam she will have to give up her dream and focus on marrying instead. Hazel is determined to succeed at any cost and when she asks Jack for help in obtaining a body to help with her studies as well as solve an illness years prior that wiped out a lot of Ediburgh’s population. There are also many mysterious disappearances in the city that Jack is hearing about which include some of his friends. As Hazel and Jack work together their friendship starts to blossom along with romantic feelings start to flourish between them. Is there a connection between the illness in the past to the disappearances or is there more to it that Hazel and Jack will discover as they risk their lives to seek survival and dreams? Will Hazel become the doctor she always wants to be or will she have to give up her passion to fulfill her family’s wishes in pursuing marriage? Will Jack and Hazel end up together? You will need to read more to find out. I loved this book very much because it had a great plot and it was a very quick and interesting read. I also loved the gothic spooky vibes in the book that had a Frankenstein element to it along with the thriller component as well. Hazel was my favorite character in the book. I love how she was a brave heroine who took risks to seek out her passion for anatomy and become a doctor rather than following what others wanted her to do in her life. She was such an amazing character full of passion, tough, sweet, strong, and took her own path in life by playing by her rules and ways. I highly recommend this book to teens and adults who love thrillers, historical fiction, and spooky/gothic stories. This book had a lot of passion, twists and turns, mystery, romance, spookiness, etc. that will keep on making you want to read more! You will not be disappointed and there is a new book that follows this book called “Immortality: A Love Story” which I am looking forward to reading next on my list to see what happens next from the plot left off at the end of the book!
