Patron Review: The Burn Palace – Stephen Dobyns

burn palaceReviewed by Kim

Quiet little Brewster Rhode Island is suddenly beset with strange happenings. A newborn is replaced with a large red and yellow snake at the hospital, a large number of coyotes have infiltrated the town, a local plumber has taken to growling at everyone, and then bodies start showing up. Is the supernatural behind all this, or is there something else happening?

The plot is very different, and the characters are wonderful. The story is told by multiple points of view but I didn’t find this confusing as the book progresses at a brisk pace and doesn’t get bogged down. It also adds to the character of the book itself because it’s like looking at snapshots of small town New England. I would definitely recommend this to lovers of horror and suspense.
